Truth ~ A fleeting phenomenon

hola

I write this post after having been deeply moved by the movie "Mona Lisa Smiles". To most it may be just another movie. But the idea that it tried to convey in every single frame was nothing but freedom. But it seems that freedom is just a fleeting truth, for we never are but are constantly yearning for it. Many pieces of art have tried to convey the same message. Odes have been written by feminist for the same. Yet we are still confronted with the same predicament. We know of freedom since we don't have it.

The movie is set in 1950s America. The period right after the world war, a time when everything was supposed to be the same. Post-modernism was a mere whisper among the alleys. The "perfect home" was the norm. Women were expected to be ace cooks, great mothers and nothing more. Men were the proverbial bread-earners of the family. And anyone who had that, had complete bliss and would not want anything more. I believe, that it was during that time the phrase "the American dream" must have been invented.

But that only leads me to ask why? "The roles we are born to play" is what Kristen Dunst's character so aptly says it. Is being a housewife all that women are supposed to do. Although in this day and age, many women have progressed and broken away from the shackles of this patriarchial society, 10 times more women are still subjugated. I remember this one incident in school; one of my friends was having some problem with her boy friend. She asked me to mediate to which I agreed. When speaking to her boy friend, we spoke alot about their future. And he proudly exclaimed that he will let her study and work as much as she wants but when they get married, she needs to become a full time housewife. That left me in a state of horror. To encounter such a male chauvanist ~_~"pig"~_~ was appauling to say the least.

Personally, I could never be with a guy who thought like that! Why can't we have equal partnership. Why is it that women have to give up their careers and dreams for the sake of their men. And why is it that to actually stand up to this deep rooted evil it is to be considered nothing less of heresy and one be made an outcast in society! It is indeed shameful that one still has to struggle through this topic when we should have moved beyond such discrimination in all its forms.

Hopefully my readers are part of the enlightened part of society or atleast become one soon enough for there is no need for such orthodoxy in our lives.

Highly distressed ~_~
