Asset? Dilemma? ~_~

hola

This post actually deals with something which is a big part of my life. It stems from my personality. It deals with "my change".
There is a famous community blog known as Orkut, of which I am a part of. I don't usually join such communities, but since all my school friends and college friends insisted that I do so, I did so. ^_^ Within the community blog, we can personally choose to create or simply join any community within the blog. I am a part of my school community and my college community.
I, in fact, created a community known as the LSR Political Science dept. It is an exclusive community for only political science students of LSR, regardless of their batch. Incidently, the main active members of the community are people from my batch. ^_^

Anyway, coming to the point of this post. We were discussing a couple of things there, including who is our favourite teacher. Quite down the line of that discussion, some anonymous person had written something quite disrespectful about a lecturer; to which alot of the members, including me replied saying that we do not wish for anyone to use profanity within the community especially if its directed towards someone. The topic was meant for fun and had no serious implications in its creation. It was to be all in good fun!

After a couple of us objecting to miss "anonymous", some people also raised the point that the person was free to express her feelings. And we should not disregard her feelings no matter of what content.
All this talk brought forth a nice discussion on respect. In my opinion, respect is something which we must grant to all, not because we might hold a teacher-student or employer-employee, etc relationship, but for the very fact that we are humans. There are alot of people which we may encounter who don't really suit our tastes, yet we must conciously choose to respect them no matter what. It is a test of our character. A matter of principle. Or even for the fact that we should treat people the way we would wish them to treat us.

After having expressed my view in the community, I got responses in support as well as in opposition. One of my friend's said that we should accept people's individuality in choosing their own paths and not impose on them this way of being. True as it may be, yet I feel, if not for others, for us, for our dignity, we must choose to respect all that stand before us. We must not give in and go down to their level by being "impolite".

It may be too stuck up of an argument, but it is something that I believe in!

What was funny was, then on in the community, another one of my friends pointed out a very funny yet extremely true fact. No matter where we may be, all of us tend to be politically correct... ALWAYS! We will never falter, never sway, never be casual or frivolous. We will always be politically correct.
And I find this fact to be quite true.
I remember when I had just entered college and after auditioning for the Western Music Society, was selected for the Independence Day Choir, I experienced a similar incident. We had decided to sing a tribal song. The president of WMS happened to be a 3rd year political science student. And she made it clear to us that when addressing the song, we will not callously term the song taken by any African tribe. We will, on the contrary, choose to impart it due respect and announce it as the song by ~ tribe. I don't remember the name of the tribe since at the time I didn't bother. I felt that the president was being too picky. However, I, now, find myself in a similar situation. If now I was to find myself in such a situation, I would also choose to be politically correct and not choose to be too careless in my addressal to anyone.

That is the change that I have noticed. Alot of my friends have noticed the same. Taking things for their face value; I have nearly forgotten how to do so. I must know what is behind the surface! Some people find it quite annoying at times. But I believe that its my asset. Sure I get frustrated at times, when I can no longer choose to relax in a social environment, for as Foucalt said it, politics is everywhere. When humans interact, there is politics. I guess I have fallen amidst that very assumption.
Yet it is an asset. Perhaps I will offend people less! ^_^
